About
Sharron Devine | Direction | Scenography | Performance…
“it is as if the artist has glimpsed inside your heart and mind, and made a gift just for you. One that you will carry with you. - Lyn Gardner Arts Critic for the Guardian and Associate Editor of the Stage
I initially trained classically as an Actress in London at East 15 Acting School, graduating with a B.A. in Acting and I have been working professionally predominantly within Theatre and some film for 25 years. I have a body of work that is difficult to define, rooted in my classical training as an actress bleeding across many creatives disciplines and practices including performance, direction and scenography.
All of my work is rooted in listening and responding to the human condition.
“Sharron’s work is so genuine and considered that even while dealing with potentially raw subjects, she invites trust from the audience member. This is a rare skill and I am lucky to have experienced two of her performances in Sheffield at WROUGHT Festival and Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The pieces may seem simple, but there is so much craft in them. Sharron’s work, is so generous, thoughtful, and in some cases, life-changing”. Erin Revell (Producer in Theatre | Performance).
I am Lead Artist on projects of my own and through my Indy Arts House, Studio Space Art and often in collaborations with other Individuals and Companies.
Theatre has given me a thorough grounding where I have been fortunate in that it has taken me to travel all over the world sharing and performing my work and continually experimenting and learning across art forms and cultures..
My artistic practice reaches out across into Site | Human Specific | Performance Art | Installation | Direction | Design | Music | Dance & Theatre.
Curiosity leads me and my attention has been focused since 2010 on researching and designing work for micro audiences and for one person. In the UK, Denmark, Hong Kong, New York, New Zealand, Italy and most recently in Scotland in my home City of Dundee.
Working so closely with my audience is magical and I have completely fallen in love with this form - this work has changed me, my life, my focus and my direction.
“one of the most powerful immersive experiences I’ve had was a one-on-one performance at Forest Fringe. Sharron Devine’s ‘I worried my heart wasn’t big enough’ invited me to trespass into the heart of her relationship with her mother. We shared foil-covered biscuits on a sofa and dressed up in too-big clothes – but her silence throughout the experience opened up space for an incredible sense of shared grief, as lingering as the cigarette perfume of the 1970s rooms we moved through.
That sense of care and intimacy would be impossible to roll out or to merchandise (at Forest Fringe, it was free, paid for by donations). But what makes immersive theatre so fascinating, and so vulnerable, is the way it creates worlds in microcosm: and with them, economic or political systems, too. You can brew a riot in a closed space, or start a cult.” Alice Saville (Freelance arts and culture writer for Exeunt, Time Out, Financial Times)
Being asked to talk much more these years about how i make my work has been really helpful for me as an Artist and i've realised that being visually and aurally inspired throughout my creative process are vital to making my works.
Music of all styles and genres are huge in my creative process and end works and I am also passionate about Collaboration, Community and Participatory Art.
I enjoy working at the intersections of art-forms with experimentation always at the forefront of my work, collaborations and artistic process encouraging me to continue to grow as an Artist, continually broadening my mind.
I relocated back to my home City of Dundee in late 2016 and since returning home, I am enjoying falling back in love with my City and re-learning all about Dundee as it is now and its urban ecosystems with fresh eyes.
Space is also very important to me; the holding of space, making a welcoming space, opening up space and the restoration and preservation of spaces and Buildings and what that means for Communities, Cities and their regeneration.
I am constantly distracted by the breathtaking beauty of the River Tay and along with my husband we have lovingly restored our own beautiful creative space where we can think creatively alone and with others who visit.
All a moment away from the River Tay here in Dundee.
Our current local work, Dud Hopes (Kryptonite) and an international collaboration in development (Twin Light Zone) are being funded through the open fund for individuals by Creative Scotland.
“Dundonian theatre maker Sharron Devine is the creative powerhouse behind Broughty Ferry indie outfit Studio Space Art.” - Rebecca Baird - Courier & Advertiser, Scotland
Studio Space Art is a beautiful 140 year old listed Building that we have worked very hard the last 8 years to lovingly restore ourselves and through the act of restoration, we’ve been able to grow our practices and artistic vision unique to us as Artists.
We are tired independent Artists finding our own ways to operate by setting our own pace and rules in our industries and we offer a space for others to catch their breath here too.
A space where community can be built together slowly, sensitively via kindness | creativity | collaboration and open conversation.
“my hair was standing on end and I felt like the centre of your attention - 'the only way out is in' is a joyous, nourishing, thought provoking and truly remarkable experience from the brilliant, gentle Sharron Devine"
- Rachel New - Arts Producer for BBC Radio Coventry and Warwickshire & Coventry Creates.
