Dud Hopes (Kryptonite) is a brand new live immersive theatre experience not in a theatre space. This new work is about hope, home, our environment and the things that make us and shape us as human beings and reminds us who the hell we are. It is a one on one outdoor experience for one audience member at a time and one artist.

You will be asked to wear headphones throughout the experience and you will be looked after - your care will always be at the core of the experience.

Access Information:
This work consists of a walk through the park on paved areas as well as pavements on the surrounding streets. You will be met by front of house in the park and there is an accessible bathroom at this point. The pavements have mild to moderate cracks, and there is one side road on the route. The side road has a steep decline to the kerb on one side, and this kerb is 2 inches high. The kerb on the other side of the road is a drop kerb. If  The kerb poses a barrier to you, please let us know and we can provide an alternative route. When on the walk, Sharron can provide balance support and sighted guide as part of the experience with physical contact ordinarily via linked arms. If you require essential companion on your walk in addition, they are more than welcome please just let us know. If you need to change the pace or have a rest at any time, this is absolutely fine. There will always be a second member of the team shadowing the walk and they will be equipped with items for your safety and comfort. As the show  is in public areas, the experience may vary in which obstacles occur, but Sharron will chat you through any obstacles and make any changes to the walk in accordance with this when necessary. In terms of the sensory experience, although you will be wearing headphones as part of the show, you may also find you are impacted by environmental factors such as traffic noise and wind.

DudHopes (Kryptonite) is a brand new performance work inspired by my home City of Dundee & is funded through the OPF stream by Creative Scotland. These funds have been crucial to us as Indy’s and those we’ve worked with locally over the past 12 months and have meant we can go slowly in our communities and listen and respond meaningfully to need and also open out our creative practices locally to invite others in - we’ve been able to nurture new networks, collaborate with and pay many locally and be in communities and schools with our outreach and education arm to connect with the project.

I have been collaborating with 6 local Artists to inform the content for the work.

We've also talked and listened with many people within our communities and our education outreach for the project has been at Sharron's old Secondary School, St John's High School in Dundee where we have been able to involve 7 young people and their teachers;

Though the end product on this project is very beautiful and very important, the process is what we value the most as artists, being able to involve others in the process of making a professional Theatre work means everything to us and creating new networks and communities so that we feel less alone core to our practice.

My work is award winning and critically acclaimed and I work nationally and internationally.
I specialise in creating micro, site specific, site responsive and immersive performance works for Theatre and found spaces for 15 years and making larger performance works for 20+ years, taking me all over the U.K. and internationally.

I trained classically in London as an Actress and spent the first 10 years of my career working extensively within Scottish Theatre, creating work in Scotland with National Theatre of Scotland, Traverse, Arches Theatre, Tron Theatre, Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Poorboy, Forest Fringe and many more.

And I’ve premiered my work in London, Liverpool, Sheffield, Coventry as part of UK City of Culture, Bratislava, Denmark, NYC, Italy, NZ & Hong Kong and I’m so excited to be sharing soon my work and this collaboration in my home City of Dundee.

As part of Dud Hopes (Kryptonite), I am collecting stories and connections to the former Dundee College of Commerce Building just off Garland Place, now abandoned and derelict since 2011.

I'll start us off;

I have a deep love and respect for architecture of all time periods and I am so sad when I see neglected Buildings anywhere but especially in my home City.
I grew up watching my Mum and Dad lovingly restore all our family homes that we had and in particular their dream Victorian period home in Dundee that they worked so hard to buy, keep and fix up.

I love this former College Building, I love its Brutalist architecture and I love the message of hope and learning that it once stood for towering over Dundee.
When the Building was in its prime, it offered an education to so many local Dundonians across many different areas of learning.

I personally studied there for 1 year in 1989 doing a Travel/Tourism & Business Course and I have so many fond memories from that time, of the area (which was so proudly kept smart) and the people I met and became friends with from the course. It was such a beautiful place at the time and it is very difficult to see it in the current state of disrepair it is currently in.

Access to Theatre & The Arts for all - free tea/coffee/blethers every second Saturday 11am-1pm with Studio Space Art @ The Little Theatre in Dundee since January 2023.

Studio Space Art (SSA) is an Indy Arts House in Dundee lovingly restored from scratch and led by independent Artists Sharron Devine (Theatre) and Ben Scappaticcio (Music) - we both hold over 20 years experience working in the Arts locally and internationally across art-forms of theatre, music, scenography, installation, site specific, site responsive, immersive, physical and visual arts and soundscape design. We also work closely as Community Artists within the local 3rd sector and Communities across Dundee.

Our space is a 140 year old listed Victorian House right by the River Tay that we have lovingly restored and we are in our 6th year.
SSA is rooted in rigorous research and is a response to a lack of space for independent Artists across live performing arts in Dundee to be together, think, assemble and catch our breath.
We research and listen very carefully locally and internationally with our current new international works in New York and Hong Kong and our local engagement and research in Dundee, supported by Creative Scotland.

Through SSA, we offer access to the arts for all, community, tailored creative residencies, guidance, mentoring, collaboration & space across live performing arts Locally and internationally.

From January - June 2023 we were for the first time outside of our own space locally in residence @ The Little Theatre in Dundee every second Saturday from 11am - 1pm.
We offered free tea, coffee and held space for community members, artists across art-forms, from all backgrounds and creative communities for anyone who wanted to come in to the Theatre for a blether. These Saturdays were a safe space and were community and artist rooted and led.
We called these Saturdays, #shift Saturdays with Studio Space Art.

Shift: a change in position, direction, or tendency.

We met so many lovely people in person and online since beginning in January, leading to us hosting Artist’s work, writers, musicians at the Theatre, meeting new community members, beginning new collaborations, learning about other cultures (and eating some home cooked Sri Lankan foods, YUM!)
And Sharron even ‘scratched’ with an intimate local audience, a very special new local piece of writing she is developing.

After an intense 6 months at the little theatre where we all donated our time, combined with all of our independent work and commitments - we are now taking a much needed long break over summer 2023.
We are however dead excited to soon begin a new period of local activity in Dundee with Creative Scotland’s support.

‘The Only Way Out Is In’ is a brand new human specific work commissioned by award winning Theatre Absolute based in Coventry, led by Julia Negus and Chris O’Connell.
The work premiered live in Coventry one year late, it was supposed to open in 2020 then return in the year of Coventry UK City of Culture 2021. The work sold out at Theatre Absolute’s gorgeous Shop Front Theatre at City Arcade; running from Wednesday October 20th - Saturday October 23rd, 2021.

The work responds to Theatre Absolute’s wonderful provocation Humanistan where a critical mass of 9 Artists across art-forms are invited to respond to 21st century life, across 3 years and of which, I am one Artist.

‘The Only Way Out Is In’ is a live multi sensory immersive one on one experience exploring themes of control, power, risk, balance, trust and choice. It also questions what might happen and change, given the opportunity to ‘see’ things differently.
The work also responds to the space; once a fish and chip shop in an old shopping mall in City Arcade.

My thanks to all the funding partners and beautiful audience who came and reminded me of the love, connection and care so abundant in this work and feels much needed in these times.
And my special thanks to Chris and Julia for commissioning me, their unwavering support over the last 6 years and for understanding and valuing the power in this art-form.
Also for having a wide open door and for giving me the keys to their huge space to match my huge imagination.
Possibly one of my largest (intimate) works spatially.
I have learned ever so much from this experiment and life changing commission.

Education and outreach engagement for the project was with Auchterhouse Primary School in Angus, Dundee with P5-7’s around the themes of the wider provocation.
We centred our focus for our education work together on the question; what does it mean to be human?
Some very brilliant and thought provoking work from the children indeed.

I am from Hilltown as was my Mother and I grew up all around the Coldside ward until I left Dundee to study in London where I trained classically as an Actress at East 15 Acting School under the School founder, Margaret Bury.
Hulltoon Space Hopper is a new free live one on one journey exploring memory, human connection, community and home.
On returning home with my family to Dundee to live 5 years ago after 20 years away, I lived back home in the Hilltown area and began researching towards this project.

In it’s simplest form, this live experience responds to the site and the area and is a creative conversation in confidence between you and me.
Hulltoon Space Hopper is the first part in a trilogy of works that will visit and remember my neighbourhood and the wider ward.

The work is produced by Studio Space Art, a local independent Art House and is supported by, Battersea Arts Centre, London.

We were all set to begin sharing the work in November 2020 but unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions we had to postpone it.

We had a short run of the work in 2021 then another run in early 2022. The work has been back in development and evaluation and is soon ready again for more outings.

The work is for anyone 18 years and over and is wheelchair accessible with babes in arms/prams/slings welcome and is around 40 minutes long.

From Dundee to Denmark, Chile to China, I have been listening and gathering the ‘sound of your voice’ in response to ‘isolation’ during the Covid - 19 pandemic.

As a maker and performer of live works; since March and during this time of isolation, I felt that I could not and did not want to try to reconfigure my work to fit into some digital online content.
So with all my freelance work postponed and on hold, I decided to allow myself this time to let this be just what it is; only a temporary loss of our live medium.

I chose to be very plugged in whilst my industry sat in darkness and went into epic emergency talks, as to how we recover post pandemic and how we can make a fairer and more equal arts. I felt compelled to use my time to be visible and to listen and to begin a conversation with anyone who wanted or needed to connect with me. It felt like change really could be possible…

I invited anyone via Community routes, Creative Dundee, my own community network of friends and collaborators, social media, Creative Scotland’s opportunity board and from all walks of life, age, jobs and corners of the globe to send me the ‘sound of your voice’ in response to ‘isolation’.
But, i also offered to be someone people could access and just talk to if that was what they needed during an unprecedented and challenging time.

I was not thinking too far ahead with what this all might become, just being in touch was what felt really important. My focus was on enjoying the process of listening, conversing with and gathering and hearing all these varied voices and perspectives at this unsettling time, no fixed outcome.

My invitation was super open so that people did not have to fit a particular shape and everyone was welcome - their response could be in any form they wanted and did not have to literally be the sound of their voice, so could be, words, music, images, audio, a dance, a piece to camera, a drawing or just a conversation with me. It was completely up to whoever answered the invitation as to how they responded at the time in isolation.

Being based in Dundee, it’s very important to me to engage with my City and the people who live here.
Since March, I have gathered around 30 voices (some who wish to remain anonymous) from across 10 Countries and it has been an incredibly powerful and beautiful process, irrespective of what we may do with all these voices and conversations.

What a wonderful mix of humans i’ve been blethering with throughout lockdown. Forever in your debt!

I’m super inspired by everyone to unplug and process it all…

We are excited to share that we will be creating a site specific | site responsive installation at our Art House here in Dundee with the voices from this lockdown global conversation we had in 2020.
We will be installing the first three Artists hopefully later this year in 2021 and opening the house for public to experience the installation.
We hope to be able to add more voices from our collection over time and in due course.

Glitch is a human specific experiment created for an audience of 20 humans.
I collaborated with 7 Artists across a 2 year period to develop the idea.
I shared the results of that research in a private showing in the studios at the stunning Xiqu Centre (Chinese Opera House) in West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong in July 2019, as part of my 3 year international Co-Lab Residency.
The curitorial bodies involved in the residency were Forest Fringe (United Kingdom), the Basement Theatre (New Zealand) and West Kowloon Cultural District (Hong Kong).

This work is ongoing in its development and is an international collaboration involving a community of Artists.

To be continued…

High Gloss is in response to twelve months of travel. In 2015/16 we took 1 year out as a family and circumnavigated the globe. We stayed in such an array of accomodation during that year out that it felt right to design a hotel room inspired by world travel for other travellers. This project was an exciting experiment and family collaboration that took place as part of an International Artist Residency at the old skool cool Carlton Arms Hotel in NYC across February | March 2017 a few months after our trip finished. 

'TURN AND FACE THE STRANGE' was the 35th Annual opening of new rooms for the Hotel featuring work from an eclectic international gathering of artists-in-residence from Sweden, Germany, Scotland and the US. 

Four completely new rooms and two updated rooms were opened at the Hotel on March 9th 2017.

High Gloss is three things:

1. A real Hotel room that you can stay in at the Carlton Arms Hotel in NYC.

2. A soundscape designed from sounds only recorded whilst on our twelve month trip.

3. An immersive one on one journey designed for travellers on the evening of the opening.

Forest Fringe | Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2015

Control 25 was Liverpool’s first large scale one on one performance festival produced by All Things Considered  and collaborated with the EAP students from Hope Street Ltd. The individual pieces of work were Curated and Directed by Sarah Hogarth and Emma Bramley.
Sarah and Emma also brought in experienced Artists in this field, Ant Hampton (Rotozaza) Seth Honnor (Kaleider) and myself to design and deliver workshops in our practices for the students to help inspire and kick off the making of their works for the Festival.
Control 25 explored the invitation to collaborate in One on One performance with the work sprawling out into everyday spaces and places in Liverpool.
The audience were invited to surrender, share and take control as they went on a solo journey around the streets and buildings of Liverpool. There were four routes and levels of risk for the audience to choose from.

Sense is a human specific work stimulating all five senses...

My one on one practice and research is rooted in sensory, immersive and olfactory performance.

Sense was created especially for and premiered at Sheffield’s first one on one Festival, WROUGHT at the Hide in Scotland Street and sold out alongside fourteen other artists.

I fall a little in love with every audience member and I thank you for being so open and teaching me to be more so…

I met Hannah Lavery when we were matched together by the Traverse Theatre for an evening of words words words at the Theatre.
I was delighted as her piece was my favourite of all the scripts I’d read and I asked for her piece to Direct.
The Traverse Cast the work and I then Directed and lit a rehearsed reading of Hannah’s gorgeous writing, ‘the hills of me’ for the Trav 1 space.

Hannah and I got along swell and kept in touch and were keen to work together again.
She then offered me her beautiful 4 minute text Breathe for me to experiment with and create a piece of work that could fit a 30 minute slot as part of a one off performance programmed for Appletree Writers' Spoken Word Sundays.
The work was shared with a micro audience of 15 at the stunning space, ‘the whole works’ in Jackson’s Close during the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2014.

When I became a new mother my creativity went through the roof so i channelled it into my daughter...

The first time was developed in collaboration with my baby for babies aged 0 – 12 months.
It is a one on one experience for one baby and their grown up. The work was researched, documented and designed in real-time alongside my own baby’s development throughout that vitally important first year of her life. 

Running alongside my research in to my one on one | human specific practice, The first time is a beautiful, gentle and inspiring baby specific, sensory led experience for young babies where all five senses are excited during their journey.

Suitable for ages 0 - 12 months

Seek to Seek was developed by Cantabile 2 and collaborators in a derelict former nursing home in the beautiful countryside on the Danish Island of Mon. 
The work then transferred to another former Nursing Home in Copenhagen where it was part of the my world images festival in August | September 2010. There was an international cast of performers from 9 different Countries; Australia, Denmark, Egypt, France, Poland, Scotland, Sweden, Syria and Germany.

Seek to Seek was made across seven levels and for each performance 24 spectators were invited and led to the performance through a 'Changing Room' where personal belongings were left behind. The audience were then led into the first level of the performance; Being then on through the next 4 levels; touching, seeing feeling and thinking.

I created one new room as part of ‘seek to seek: ‘the hand is the human beings external brain’

The Venus Labyrinth is the highly acclaimed Danish installation-performance work originally produced by Cantabile 2 in 2003. It was specially re-created in July 2010 for Conflux’s SURGE Festival at the Arches Theatre in Glasgow by Cantabile 2′s core company and 11 Artists based in Scotland.

The Venus Labyrinth is one of the major works of Nullo Facchini and Cantabile 2, made as a part of Facchinis investigation of a new theatre form transforming the site-specific into the human-specific, and dealing with the universal sensitivity of human as an emotional being.
The Venus Labyrinth is conceived as an individual, interactive journey into the female brain. The Labyrinth contains 28 installation rooms, corresponding to the 28 known areas of the human brain, and each room is inhabited by a woman.

22 of the 28 instillation rooms were new original works created by the performers in collaboration with Director Nullo Facchini, starting from a true personal memory, an experience, in some cases even a secret.
I created 2 rooms for this project; Sense of Smell and Balance. 

The Arches | Cantabile 2

Black Box Lost was a physical piece of work developed in collaboration with the Third Hand Theatre Company from Slovakia. The work premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe then transferred to Bratislava later the same year opening at the Art Teatro to a sold out house.

With minimal text and a strong emphasis on physicality and gesture the end work was a very beautiful and touching account of what it must be like to be lost in a sometimes funny, often tender, frightening and lonely world locked inside a mind that is sadly failing you.

K won the Arches Theatre Award for Stage Directors in association with National Theatre of Scotland | the Traverse | the Tron

This award winning work was a three hander devised over five weeks. There was no text in the work and was my first immersion into making work from a more physical, visual and aural approach.
The work premiered at the Arches in Glasgow then transferred to the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh.

The work was inspired by Franz Kafka's 'the Castle' and explored themes of alienation, frustration and bureacracy.

How to kill you lover was devised over a three week period in Edinburgh | Scotland.
The work premiered at the Traverse Theatre in Edinburgh and sold out for its run. The work went back into further development and rehearsals early in the new year in preparation for a Scottish Theatre Tour that ended with a sold out run on the main stage at the Tron Theatre in Glasgow.

The work was inspired by Pablo Neruda's poem 'i do not love you except because i love you' and the visual art of Bruce Nauman and investigated the twin themes of love and jealousy within a relationship.

Learning the Rules of Chinese Whispers was awarded a 5 star review by the Scotsman and nominated for two Scottish Theatre Critic awards for best production and best director.

An epic 3 hander; the work was a site specific promenade piece that sprawled over three main sites in St Andrews, Scotland; A church, an Art Centre and a Museum.

The work explored love, sex and family relationships and how we remember what we remember.
